How to Create Emotion in Your Photos
By far, my favourite photos are ones that capture true, natural laughter and I think they have quickly become a huge part of my style. So how do I do it?
Don't Have People Stare into the Camera
If you were really laughing, the last thing you would think to do is look directly into the camera. Have your subject look at an object off to their left, then make them laugh by telling a joke, acting like a weirdo, or telling them to "stare at that squirrel's bum".
Just Ask Them to Laugh
Unless you're a professional actor, fake, or nervous laughter will always create genuine laughter. Just make sure that you have your camera ready to capture it. The in-between moments are usually the best.
Give Them Strange, or Super Complicated Directions
When you tell someone to stare at their own nose, or their eye lashes it will almost always create laughter...especially if they don't see it coming. People like to have fun on a photo shoot and the sooner you get them to relax, the more organic and genuine your photos will be.
Don't Take Yourself Too Seriously
Ten years from now when someone is looking at their beautiful photos, the last thing they'll remember is how you did something silly, or said something embarrassing about yourself...and if they do, then they also remember how you gave it your all in order to create great photos for them.
